wtf cabbot

*tears out hear*

So I had lunch with a friend the other day and it got me thinking about some of my unfinished work, specifically The Witch and The Werewolf, which I'd renamed to The Hinges of Hell after finishing the first two thirds, and I realized that structurally, it was more like two finished novellas and one unfinished one, so why not try to sub them that way now that the market is a lot friendlier to novellas.

And now I can't *FIND* THH... or the only finished novel I've ever written, The Violet Darkness (which, while not wonderfully written, has a structure that I rather like and a universe that I enjoy).

What the hell, man. Time to panic?

I know I have backups somewhere but I would have sworn I had copies in my email.

EDIT: Found TVD in my downloads folder, and I think I posted most of TWTW to deviantart in the unedited form, so at least I have some of it, but still. argh!

Stuff

I haven't posted in forever. Figured I'd give an update:

* Eating pad thai from Thai Basil, of "Throwdown with Bobby Flay" flame. Too much peanut, but that's probably my own fault for mixing it all in.
* Went to the NASA museum in Chantilly. Lots of planes, woopie, but oh god the traffic was awful.
* Ate dinner at PAZO, the Spanish tappas place I haven't been to since high school. Was just as tasty as I remember. Ate beef tartar for the first time. Not to my taste -- I preferred the sweet potato soup.
* My British friend who works in India says my local Indian eatery is totally authentic, yay. We got the tasting menu, oh god so much food.
* Working on THE GENOCIDE DRAFT, my first science fiction piece. Just hit 20,000 words. Started doing the word wars with C. E. Murphy and co. again, since I have real internet and a job and a piece I'm working on. I like to use Q10 software for it, because of the timer.
* Been playing some silly little game called Edgeworld. My dad plays too now. It's nice to talk to him online.
* I feel so poor. Spent way too much money in gas and eating out, but that's what you do when you have friends in from out of town.
* We're eating Easter dinner with Shawn's father Sunday. He dropped off a bunch of food for Shawn to cook -- it's enough to feed a family of 10, jesus. It's just going to be the three of us.
* Been getting a lot of headaches lately, it sucks.
* Oh, I have a job now. I work in the special education department of my local high school. Mostly I help kids with cerebral palsy. The interpersonal politics is bleh but the job itself is nice. Just wish it paid more -- need to take the praxis test to get promoted but the online information for it is a huge hassle to navigate, boo.

Crap Net

My internet has gone to crap. It comes and goes. But I start work tomorrow, and once I get my student loan situation sorted out, I'll try to get DSL or something. In the meantime, expect posts and such to be infrequent. Well, they were always infrequent, but I usually read and posted at communities.

Bleh :(

Wishlist 2011

Wishlist 2011, Prompt Post

What is the Wishlist?

The Wishlist is a multi-fandom Christmas fanfiction fest. It is something that started very small and simple three years ago. The premise was simply to write twenty-four ficlets in response to twenty-four prompts, posted between 1 Dec and 24 Dec. Fandom gifts, if you will. Since then it's grown and changed a bit.

The community and the rules in detail can be found here.

I have signed up to be a writer and if you want to give me a prompt, please leave a comment on this entry.

Rules

- I accept the first 12 prompts I am given, regardless of who you are or if I know you.

- You give me characters/pairing, a fandom and a prompt.

- If I don't know the fandom you're requesting, your prompt doesn't count. The fandoms I prefer to write in are:

* Dune
* Roswell
* Supernatural
* Dresden Files
* Stargate SG1 / Atlantis
* Black Jewels Trilogy
* Charmed
* Firefly
* Buffy
* Angel
* Pern & Talent Series (McCaffrey)
* Animorphs

(but as long as I am at least familiar with the fandom, I'll do my best).

You can see my Ao3 profile here. Fair warning, I come from a pbp/pbem RPG background, and less of a fanfiction background, so I'm more used to OCs in a fandom universe than using fandom characters. But I'm willing to give it a go :)

- If I find your prompt in any way offensive, I will disregard it, too. Fair warning.

- Your prompts should somewhat match what I usually write/draw. It can be a quote, an idea, a specific situation, but the more you give me, the more I have to work with. Throwing Character X/Character Y, whatever at me is going to get you whatever.

- If you don't have an lj account, leave an anonymous comment, but make sure to sign it with a name (possibly your TtH name, if you're coming from that end.)

- I answer the prompts in the order I like best and post them here and/or in the [info]wishlist_fic community, one a day, starting 1 Dec 2011.

Again, I need fandom, characters or pairings, prompt, and your name.

Mississippi Personhood Amendment

Okay, so I don't usually do this, but this is an issue near and dear to me and this is getting very little no attention in the mainstream media.

Mississippi is voting on November 8th on whether to pass Amendment 26, the "Personhood Amendment". This amendment would grant fertilized eggs and fetuses personhood status.

Putting aside the contentious issue of abortion, this would effectively outlaw birth control and criminalize women who have miscarriages. This is not a good thing.

Jackson Women's Health Organization is the only place women can get abortions in the entire state, and they are trying to launch a grassroots movement against this amendment. This doesn't just apply to Mississippi, though, as Personhood USA, the group that introduced this amendment, is trying to introduce identical amendments in all 50 states.

What's more, in Mississippi, this amendment is expected to pass. It even has Mississippi Democrats, including the Attorney General, Jim Hood, backing it.

The reason I'm posting this here is because I made a meager donation to the Jackson Women's Health Organization this morning, and I received a personal email back hours later - on a Sunday - thanking me and noting that I'm one of the first "outside" people to contribute.

So if you sometimes pass on political action because you figure that enough other people will do something to make a difference, make an exception on this one. My RSS reader is near silent on this amendment. I only found out about it through a feminist blog. The mainstream media is not reporting on it.

If there is ever a time to donate or send a letter in protest, this would be it.

What to do?

- Read up on it. Wake Up, Mississippi is the home of the grassroots effort to fight this amendment. Daily Kos also has a thorough story on it.

- If you can afford it, you can donate at the site's link.

- You can contact the Democratic National Committee to see why more of our representatives aren't speaking out against this.

- Like this Facebook page to help spread awareness.

For those wanting to know more about the recent DDoS attacks, yes, it looks like it was the Russian government trying to shut down the dissidents again.

As I said last time, while it's frustrating not to have access, LJ is a lot more than a social network platform. From the article:

"LiveJournal isn’t just a social network. It’s also a platform for organizing civic action. Dozens of network projects and groups mobilize people to solve specific problems — from defending the rights of political prisoners to saving endangered historic architecture in Moscow."

So while I know many are considering the move over to Dreamwidth and other such sites, supporting LJ is a way we can help support those who use it for more than a writing/roleplaying/social venue.

Also, as a FYI, LJ is giving paid users effected by the outage two weeks of paid time as compensation.

Also posted at Dreamwidth, where there are comment(s); comment here or there.
